Let’s break down the showdown!

Fira

Fira, also known as Thira, stands as the captivating capital of Santorini, a charming village adorned with iconic cobbled alleys. Here, the dominant white hue of houses, the light blue accents of doors and windows, and the deep blue shades of church domes create a picturesque canvas. Perched on the western part of the island, just 10 kilometers from the main port, Fira unveils a plethora of hotels, many featuring pools and splendid sea views.

Clinging to the cliffs of the caldera at 260 meters above sea level, Fira captivates with sudden glimpses of beauty at every turn. The exceptional views, especially of the submerged volcano, have drawn tourists from all corners of Europe and the world, giving rise to a remarkable number of boutiques and shops in just a few years. Navigating Fira is a breeze: Theotokopoulou Square is the main hub, intersected by 25-Martiou Street, leading to the upper part of the village. To reach the sea, take the cobbled alley near Pelikan Travel agency.

The heart of daily and nightlife activity converges in five or six narrow streets. Immerse yourself in the enchanting allure of Fira, a destination that seamlessly blends tradition, panoramic vistas, and vibrant experiences.

Oia

Oia, also known as Ià, stands as arguably the most beautiful and picturesque village on the island. Its churches with radiant domes and troglodytic homes seemingly suspended in mid-air perfectly embody the essence of Greece, forming an iconic image in our collective imagination. Perched high on the edge of the Caldera, Oia boasts narrow alleys, a breathtaking panorama, meticulously curated shops, charming museums, numerous art galleries, and the remnants of the Venetian fortress, all contributing to Oia’s unique and captivating character.

In the latter half of the 19th century, Oia flourished as a thriving center, engaging in trade with Russia, the Levant, and Alexandria, Egypt. An immense shipyard nestled beneath the cliffs, officers and sea captains resided in elegant homes atop the cliff, while sailors occupied the troglodytic dwellings.

Comparison between Fira and Oia

Contrary to Fira, Oia has endeavored and still strives today to preserve its charm, steering clear of mass tourism. Despite this, the main street is home to many luxury shops and jewelers. Nevertheless, the allure of the past lingers in the air, and from Oia, you can revel in a truly unique view of the bay and the volcano.

Exploring the cities – Fira vs Oia – the most photogenic?

The main reason people visit Santorini is for those captivating white houses perched on the cliffs of the caldera. Both villages are typical, with mostly white houses and buildings in various colors.

However, in my opinion, Oia boasts more interesting photographic angles and buildings worth capturing. If you stay there, I recommend exploring it at dawn—it offers a very different experience!

Sunset views in Santorini

Concerning sunset views, the entire west coast of Santorini offers great experiences. The most famous viewpoint is Oia Castle, offering a panoramic view of the Ammoudi Bay with the sun setting behind the buildings. However, Oia gets too crowded at sunset and is not enjoyable.

Things to do in Oia vs Things to do in Fira

Day trips Let’s clarify one thing: all organized day trips include pickup in both Fira and Oia—wine tours, boat tours (see my favorites), walking tours, sunset tours, etc. Therefore, there’s no better place to stay in that regard. Both provide easy access to the best things to do in Santorini.

Local ports: Amoudi Bay vs Old Port of Santorini

  • Both towns offer the chance to descend to water level where their small ports are located:
  • In Oia, you can go to Amoudi Bay via stairs or a road (limited parking at the bottom).
  • In Fira, you can descend to the old port via stairs or the cable car. The fishing port of Amoudi Bay has more charm in my opinion.

City activities Besides admiring the views and getting lost in the labyrinth of narrow alleys, what else can you do in both towns?

  • Great restaurants in both.
  • Oia is mainly accommodation-focused; there are fewer shopping opportunities than in Fira.
  • Fira has several museums, including folklore and archaeology.
  • Oia has the small Maritime Museum.

Where to stay – Accommodation in Fira and Oia

Both towns offer a wide range of accommodation, including hotels, cave houses, rentals, etc. However, Oia has many more high-end small accommodations (cave houses) for unique experiences. In general, prices are more affordable in Fira.

Best places to stay in Oia:

  • Apartment: I stayed at Ianthe Apartments & Villa (paid in full). They were very welcoming, the location was convenient, and the accommodation had a common rooftop terrace—good value for money.
  • Luxury cave villa: Cleo’s dream villa with incredible views without being bothered by tourists. Check photos and availability.
  • Hotel: The Museum Grand Hotel offers a common terrace with views, a pool, and beautiful decor.
  • Luxury cave: If you’re looking for something unique, check out Lava Caves and their cave jacuzzi. Budget-friendly: Anemomilos Apartments are a great alternative. They’re not right on the edge but offer excellent facilities.

Best places to stay in Fira:

  • Apartments: Kamares Apartments offer excellent views with a jacuzzi for a great mid-range option.
  • Luxury villa: If you dream of being in an infinity pool with incredible views, White Ark is an option.
  • Hotel: Families are welcome at the small Keti Hotel situated on the cliffs of Fira, offering incredible views.
  • Adults-only hotel: Callia Retreat Suites offer excellent facilities just steps from the vibrant center of Fira.
  • Budget-friendly: Olive Tree Suites apartments are an interesting option in terms of price vs. quality (but they’re not on the edge of the caldera).

Lodging in Fira

In Fira, the island’s capital, there is an abundance of tourist facilities. The hotel offerings are of high quality; if your budget allows, you can reserve a room with a pool overlooking the caldera. Otherwise, you can always opt for a traditional hotel or an apartment. Choosing Fira as a base to explore the island is a great idea due to the city’s central location and the vibrant nightlife it offers.
